Do solar lights actually work under Irish cloud cover?

This is the question we get asked most, and it's a fair one — Ireland gets a fraction of the direct sunlight hours of southern Europe. The honest answer: modern solar lights use monocrystalline panels that charge from ambient daylight, not just direct sun, so they do work here, but panel size and battery capacity matter far more in Ireland than in sunnier climates. A cheap solar light with a small panel will disappoint after a few overcast days; one with a larger panel and a decent lithium battery will comfortably run 8-10 hours a night even after a grey week. If you want the full breakdown of what to look for, we've written a dedicated guide: Solar Lights in Ireland — What Actually Works.

All lights in this collection are chosen with Irish conditions in mind — IP44 to IP65 rated for rain and damp, and specified with panel sizes that keep working through our winters, not just our (rare) summers.

Garden and path lights — stake lights and ground lamps for borders and walkways, including our solar flower stake light and stainless steel half-moon stake light.

Wall and post lights — for entrances, driveways and boundary walls. The solar LED outdoor wall light and motion-sensor post light are both IP65 rated for continuous outdoor exposure.

In-ground and walkable lights — flush recessed spots for patios and decking that take foot traffic. Our IP67 walkable in-ground light is one of our best-reviewed pieces in this collection.

String and festoon lights — for patios, pergolas and outdoor entertaining. See the solar-powered string lights or browse our full Fairy & Festoon Lights collection for more.

Common questions

What are the best solar lights for an Irish garden?+

Look for a monocrystalline panel (more efficient in low light than polycrystalline), a lithium-ion battery rather than NiMH, and at least IP44 rating for rain exposure. Panel size matters more than brand — a larger panel charges faster on overcast days, which is most days here.

Do solar garden lights work in winter?+

Yes, but expect shorter run times — winter days are shorter and darker, so a light that runs 10 hours in summer might run 5-6 in December. Lights with a larger panel and lithium battery hold up far better through the winter months than budget models.

Are solar wall lights as bright as wired outdoor lights?+

Good solar wall lights get close, but wired lights still edge ahead on pure lumen output. For security lighting or a well-lit entrance, look for solar models rated 400 lumens or higher with a motion sensor mode, which boosts brightness only when needed and preserves battery.

Can I walk on in-ground solar lights?+

Only if they're specifically rated for it — check for IP67 and a "walkable" or "load-bearing" spec, like our in-ground recessed light. Standard in-ground stake lights are not designed to take foot traffic and can crack under weight.
