How high should pendant lights hang over a kitchen island?

This is the single most common question we get about pendant lights, so here's the short answer: the bottom of the shade should sit roughly 75-90cm above the worktop surface, which usually works out to about 150-160cm from the floor on a standard Irish kitchen island. Go lower for a more intimate, dining-table feel; go higher if the pendants are purely decorative and you want an unobstructed sightline across the island. For three pendants over a standard island, space them evenly with roughly 25-30cm gaps between fittings. We cover sizing, spacing and number of pendants in full detail — including diagrams — in Pendant Lights for a Kitchen Island: Height, Number and Style Sorted.

For a classic look that works well at this height, our opal glass globe pendant (available in 5 sizes) is one of our most popular island fittings, alongside the IP44-rated brass gallery version for kitchens where steam or splashes are a factor.

Styles

For an industrial look, the industrial bar pendant works well as a multi-drop fitting over a longer island or table. Prefer warm metal tones? The copper glass globe pendant and small copper pendant both bring warmth without going fully industrial. If you need the drop height to be adjustable after installation, our adjustable LED pendant lets you fine-tune the height on site.

Common questions

What height should pendant lights be over a kitchen island?

+

Aim for 75-90cm between the bottom of the shade and the worktop — roughly 150-160cm from the floor on a standard-height island. Adjust down slightly for a cosier, more intimate feel, or up if you want an uninterrupted view across the kitchen.

How many pendant lights do I need over an island?

+

Two or three is standard for most Irish kitchen islands, depending on length. As a rule of thumb, divide the island length by the number of pendants to leave roughly equal gaps of 25-30cm between fittings, with the outer pendants inset slightly from each end.

Can pendant light drop height be adjusted after fitting?

+

Some pendants use a fixed cable length set at installation, while others — like our adjustable LED pendant — allow you to shorten or lengthen the drop afterward. If you're unsure of the exact height you want, choosing an adjustable model removes the guesswork.
