Spotlights by room
Kitchens and bathrooms are where spotlights and downlights earn their keep — even, shadow-free light over worktops and mirrors that a single central fitting can't match. For kitchens, space downlights roughly 1-1.2m apart and slightly forward of wall units to avoid casting a shadow over the worktop. For bathrooms, always check the IP rating for the specific zone — our industrial LED ceiling spotlight works well outside splash zones, while zones near a bath or shower need at least IP65. Do I legally need fire-rated downlights in Ireland?

If your ceiling has fire separation between floors — which most Irish homes do — recessed downlights that penetrate that ceiling need to be fire-rated to maintain the fire barrier. This is a building regulation requirement, not optional, particularly in first-floor ceilings under a bedroom.
How many downlights do I need for a kitchen?

As a rough guide, space downlights 1-1.2m apart in a grid, positioned slightly forward of wall cabinets to avoid shadowing the worktop below. A typical Irish kitchen of 3x4m usually needs 6-9 downlights for even coverage, depending on wattage.
What IP rating do bathroom spotlights need?

Directly above a bath or shower (zone 1), you need IP65. Outside the splash zone but still in the bathroom (zone 2 and beyond), IP44 is generally sufficient. Always check the fitting's specific zone rating rather than assuming any "bathroom spotlight" covers every position.
