Spotlights & Downlights

Spotlights and downlights provide focused, directional light from the ceiling. They're most useful in kitchens and home offices where task lighting matters, in hallways where you want reliable general illumination, and in living rooms where you want to direct light at a specific wall, artwork, or furniture grouping rather than lighting the whole room evenly.

The most common installation mistake is placing downlights in a regular grid across the ceiling. That approach creates even brightness throughout the room but no depth or atmosphere. More effective is positioning spotlights to light the walls and key surfaces, with fewer fittings placed more deliberately. Spots aimed at walls reflect light back into the room and eliminate the flat, overlit feel that a ceiling grid creates.

For Irish kitchens, spots work best over the worktop and island separately, on different circuits if possible, so you can light the cooking area independently from the dining or living zone.
