Getting wall light height and placement right
The single most common wall light mistake is mounting height — too low and they glare at eye level, too high and they wash the ceiling instead of the wall. As a general rule, bedside wall lights sit 60-70cm above the mattress, and hallway or living room wall lights sit at roughly 150-160cm from the floor, measured to the centre of the fitting. Narrow Irish hallways benefit from a low-projection fitting rather than a large drum shade, so the light doesn't catch elbows or coats in passing. Common questions
How high should wall lights be mounted?

For hallways and living rooms, aim for roughly 150-160cm from the floor to the centre of the fitting — around eye level for a seated person, but not glaring for someone standing. For bedside wall lights, 60-70cm above the mattress works well so the light falls just above shoulder height when you're sitting up.
Can I fit a wall light with a plug instead of hardwiring it?

Yes — several fittings in this collection come with a standard plug and cable rather than requiring a hardwired connection, which is useful if you're renting or don't want an electrician involved. Check the individual product's "connection" spec before ordering, as not all wall lights offer this option.
What IP rating do I need for a bathroom wall light?

In splash zones near a sink or bath, look for at least IP44. Directly inside a shower enclosure or in the direct spray zone, you need IP65. Outside these zones, standard indoor wall lights are fine — check the room layout before choosing.
Do outdoor wall lights need to be on a separate switch to indoor ones?

Not necessarily, but it's common practice in Ireland to wire outdoor lights on their own circuit or switch, especially if they include a motion sensor, so they can operate independently of indoor lighting schedules. An electrician can advise on the best setup for your consumer unit.
