Festoon lights work best strung between two fixed points at a gentle catenary curve — not pulled tight. For a standard Irish patio of 4m × 4m, a 10m string with E27 bulbs at 50cm spacing covers the space without overcrowding. For indoor bedroom use, 3–5m of micro LED fairy lights on a USB or battery pack is enough to light a headboard wall or frame a window.
