Decorative indoor fairy lights
For bedrooms, shelves and photo displays, battery or USB-powered strings are the easiest option — no cable to hide, no plug socket needed nearby. Our photo clip fairy lights are popular for displaying prints and cards, and the star fairy lights add a decorative shape rather than plain bulbs. For something more of a feature piece, the jam jar wall light combines a wall fitting with fairy lights inside the jar.
Outdoor and garden fairy lights
Outdoor strings need at least an IP44 rating to survive Irish rain, and a solar option is worth considering for spots without a nearby socket — see our Solar Lights collection for solar fairy and string light options specifically. For mains or battery options, our full breakdown of what actually holds up outdoors is in the fairy lights guide.
Festoon lights for patios and parties
For patios, pergolas and garden parties, festoon (bulb-style) lights give a warmer, more substantial look than fine fairy lights. Our G40 connectable festoon lights are IP44 rated and can be linked end-to-end to cover a longer run without multiple sockets — one of our most popular picks for this collection.
Common questions
What's the difference between fairy lights and festoon lights?
+
Fairy lights use many small, fine LED bulbs on a thin wire — better for a soft, twinkling look indoors or draped over small features. Festoon lights use larger, more visible bulbs spaced further apart on a thicker cable — better suited to patios and outdoor entertaining where you want a warmer, statement look.
Can festoon lights be left outside all year in Ireland?
+
IP44-rated festoon lights can generally stay up year-round, but it's worth disconnecting the plug end during heavy storms and checking connectors periodically for water ingress. The bulbs themselves are the most exposed part and are usually the first to need replacing.
Do solar fairy lights work as well as plug-in ones in Ireland?
+
They're dimmer and less consistent through winter, since they depend on daylight to charge. For a patio you use mainly in summer, solar is a fine, wire-free option. For year-round or winter use, a plug-in or battery string is more reliable.
