Fire Rated GU10 Downlight — Fire Separation, Acoustic Insulation, Interchangeable Bezels
A fire-rated downlight is not optional in most new-build and renovation projects: building regulations require that any penetration in a fire-separating ceiling — the floor between two storeys, or between a habitable room and a loft — must be sealed with a fitting that maintains the fire resistance of the ceiling for a specified period. This downlight is tested and certified for 30, 60, and 90-minute fire-rated ceilings, covering the full range of residential and light commercial requirements. The acoustic rating addresses the second consequence of ceiling penetrations: sound transmission. A standard downlight creates an uninsulated hole through which sound travels freely between floors. The acoustic insulation in this fitting reduces that transmission — relevant in bedrooms, home offices, and any room above or below a living space. IP20 means this fitting is rated for indoor dry locations only — it is not suitable for bathroom zones 1 or 2, or for outdoor use. The interchangeable bezel system allows the finish to be changed without replacing the fitting body, which is useful in renovation projects where the scheme may change or where multiple rooms require different finishes on the same circuit.
The push-fit loop in/loop out terminal block speeds up installation on multi-downlight circuits. Recess depth is 107mm — confirm the ceiling void depth before ordering, particularly in older properties with shallow joists. Cutout ø75mm is standard for most GU10 downlight positions. Compatible with solid timber, I-joists, and metal web joists. This fitting must be installed by a qualified, registered electrician. Common questions
Do I need a fire-rated downlight, and which rating applies to my project?
+
If the downlight is being installed in a ceiling that separates two floors — a ground floor ceiling below a bedroom, or any ceiling in a flat or apartment — a fire-rated fitting is required by building regulations. The required rating (30, 60, or 90 minutes) depends on the building type and ceiling construction. Your electrician or building control officer will confirm the required rating. This fitting is certified for all three ratings, so it covers the full residential range.
What GU10 bulb should I use with this fitting?
+
This fitting takes a standard GU10 (push-and-twist) LED bulb. For kitchens and bathrooms, 3000K warm white at 5W gives a clean, practical result. For living rooms and bedrooms, 2700K extra warm white gives a warmer, more atmospheric tone. Avoid halogen GU10 bulbs — the heat output is higher than the fitting is designed for with LED insulation. Browse our LED bulbs collection for compatible options.
How do I change the bezel finish?
+
The bezel clips onto the fitting body and can be removed and replaced without tools — switch off at the mains first. Replacement bezels are available separately in white, matt white, polished chrome, and satin nickel. Contact us to order the bezel finish you need.
Will I need an electrician to install this?
+
Yes — this fitting must be connected to the mains by a qualified, registered electrician. The push-fit loop in/loop out terminal block speeds up installation on multi-downlight circuits. Confirm the ceiling void depth (minimum 107mm) and cutout diameter (75mm) with your electrician before ordering. Read our first-fix lighting checklist.
Can this downlight be used in a bathroom?
+
No — this fitting is rated IP20, which means it is suitable for indoor dry locations only. Bathroom zones 1 and 2 require a minimum IP44 rating; zone 0 (inside the bath or shower) requires IP67. For bathroom ceiling downlights, you need a fitting with the appropriate IP rating for the zone. This fitting is suitable for bedrooms, living rooms, hallways, and kitchens outside the splash zone.
