Forged Steel & High Ceilings — A Fitting Built for Scale
The gear wheel structure is not decorative detail — it is the entire concept. This pendant references industrial machinery directly: the toothed wheel frame in forged steel reads as a functional object repurposed as a light fitting, which is exactly the aesthetic that defines authentic industrial design. The brown patina on the steel frame contrasts with the black metal shades and chains, creating a two-tone palette that is warm without being rustic. At 132cm (2-arm) or 150cm (4-arm) in length, this is a fitting designed for rooms with ceiling heights of at least 280–300cm — in a standard 240cm room it will feel oversized and the proportions will be lost. In a double-height living space, a converted warehouse, a loft, or a stairwell with generous vertical clearance, it becomes the focal point the room needs. The 4-arm version at 150×58cm adds two extra light points and significantly more visual mass — choose it for the largest spaces or where you want the fitting to dominate rather than complement.
Each socket takes an E27 bulb at 25W maximum. Because the metal shades are directional (open at the bottom), bulb shape affects the light distribution: a standard globe E27 will spread light downward and slightly sideways; a tubular or candle-shaped filament bulb will concentrate output more narrowly. For the most atmospheric result, use vintage-style filament LEDs at 2700K — the warm amber glow through the black shades creates pools of light rather than a uniform wash. The fitting is fixed in position once installed — non-tiltable, non-rotatable. Height is adjusted via the chain links before installation. A qualified electrician is required for connection. Common Questions
What ceiling height do I need for this pendant?
+
This fitting is designed for high ceilings — a minimum of 280cm is recommended, and it works best at 300cm or above. At a standard 240cm ceiling, the proportions are lost and the fitting will feel cramped. If your ceiling is 240–260cm, this pendant is not the right choice — consider a more compact industrial pendant instead. In a loft, converted space, stairwell, or double-height room, it is exactly the right scale.
Should I choose 2 arms or 4 arms?
+
The 2-arm (132×38cm) suits large dining tables up to 180cm and open-plan spaces where you want a statement piece without overwhelming the room. The 4-arm (150×58cm) is for the largest spaces — rooms above 30m², double-height areas, or positions where the fitting needs to anchor a very large visual field. The 4-arm also provides more light output (4 × 25W vs 2 × 25W), which matters if this is the primary light source in a large room.
What bulbs work best with the black metal shades?
+
The shades are open at the bottom and direct light downward. A vintage filament E27 LED at 2700K (globe G80 or tubular T45) gives the most atmospheric result — the warm glow through the black shade creates a defined pool of light with a dramatic contrast between lit and unlit areas. Avoid frosted or cool-white bulbs: frosted reduces the filament effect, and cool white clashes with the warm brown steel frame. Maximum 25W equivalent per socket.
How is the hanging height adjusted?
+
Height is set by removing or adding chain links before installation — no specialist tools required for the chain itself. Your electrician will connect the fitting to the ceiling rose at the desired height. Decide on the final drop before installation is complete, as adjusting the chain afterwards means temporarily lowering the fitting. For a dining table, aim for 70–80cm clearance between the bottom of the shade and the table surface.
Is forged steel heavier than standard metal fittings — does my ceiling need reinforcing?
+
Forged steel is denser than cast or pressed metal, so this fitting is heavier than a standard pendant. Your electrician should confirm that the ceiling rose mounting point can support the weight before installation — standard plasterboard fixings may not be sufficient. A solid joist fixing or a dedicated ceiling plate is recommended. This is a routine check for any large chandelier or heavy pendant and does not require structural work in most cases.
